Life on Earth

A mural about the interdependence of all life.

ASAP! summer campers were tasked with creating a mural for the barn at Warren Woods. We took the opportunity to explore and illustrate our relationship with nature.

Older campers used paper ‘windows’ to make up-close observational drawings of nature.

Younger campers drew detailed creatures and scenes from memories of gardens, backyards, and storms.

We discussed that we share breath with trees, that the poop of worms fertilizes our food, and that the water in our bodies may once have been part of a flowing river.

I supported campers’ artistic freedom while encouraging them to contribute visual elements that would tell the story of our relationship with nature. The installation process was loose and the final product energetic and wild because we didn’t over-plan the design. The mural is reflective of the true nature of the artists who created it.
